Joint french italian PhD

A FP7/Marie Curie action PhD grant is available for a joint PhD on graphene- and nanotube-based biosensors.  Roughly 18 months in Bologna (with F. Paolucci) and 18 months in Bordeaux (CRPP, with A. Pénicaud), starting date: October 2010.

Globally, the BioChemLig project aims at the design and characterization of new molecular/supramolecular functional nanoscale architectures for the development of ultra-high sensitivity biomolecules recognition platforms and engineered biocatalytic systems. The project to be developed during this PhD aims at the development of new probes for the electrochemical and electrochemiluminescent detection of important biomarkers taking advantage of the unique features of novel carbon nanostructures (graphene and carbon nanotubes). Starting from the reduced graphene solutions recently obtained at CRPP,1 proof-of-concept functionalization with simple molecules will be performed, applying knowledge developed on carbon nanotubes solutions.2 In a second step, functionalization with relevant biomolecules will be performed and the detection of important biomarkers tested, applying knowledge developped at the University of Bologna.

The candidate should have a good background in organic chemistry in/or electrochemistry, analytical and physical chemistry in general. Roughly, half of the research will be conducted at the University of Bordeaux, the other half at the University fo Bologna. Mastering of french and italian is a plus but not a prerequisite. The PhD fellow will participate in an integrative research project using a panel of methodologies including synthetic chemistry, electrochemistry, high throughput screening, immunoanalysis, ligation of macromolecules and nanoparticules.

Applicants must have a diploma giving access to doctoral studies.

Preferred education profile : MSc in synthetic chemistry, electrochemistry, analytical or physical chemistry.

Applicants should send an e-mail with CV and 2 letters of recommendation to
